CURAÇAO MAKES HISTORY The Blue Wave — FIFA World Cup 2026

CURAÇAO MAKES HISTORY
The Blue Wave — FIFA World Cup 2026

160,000 people. 443 square kilometres.
The smallest nation ever to qualify for
the FIFA World Cup.

This is Curaçao.
This is the Blue Wave.
And this is history.

---

THE OFFICIAL NICKNAME — THE BLUE WAVE

The Curaçao national football team is officially
known as the Blue Wave — named after the deep
blue of the Caribbean Sea and the flag they
carry onto every pitch.

BBI's Blue Wave campaign takes its name and
its colors directly from this team and what
they represent. Because when Curaçao qualified
for the World Cup — they did exactly what
BBI stands for.

They broke barriers. Intentionally.

THE HISTORIC QUALIFICATION

In November 2025 Curaçao drew 0-0 against
Jamaica in Kingston — and with that result
sealed their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

No one expected it.
Except the players. And the island.

Their qualifying campaign was remarkable:

Second Round — Group C:
Undefeated. Perfect record.
Defeated Barbados 4-1
Defeated Aruba 2-0
Defeated Saint Lucia 4-0
Defeated Haiti 5-1

Final Round — Group B:
Undefeated. Three wins. Three draws.
Defeated Bermuda 7-0 (largest win)
Drew 0-0 with Jamaica to clinch qualification

Total: 10 matches. 7 wins. 3 draws. 0 losses.

The smallest nation by both population and
land area in the history of the FIFA World Cup.

THE PLAYERS WHO MADE IT HAPPEN

The Blue Wave squad is made up of players
with deep Caribbean roots — many born on the
island, many raised in the Dutch Caribbean
diaspora in the Netherlands, all choosing
to represent Curaçao on the world stage.

That choice is itself a statement.
When you could represent elsewhere — you
choose your island. You choose your identity.
You choose to say: I know where I come from.

Key players in the historic qualification:

Gervane Kastaneer
Led the team with 5 goals in qualification.
A forward who plays professionally in Europe
and chose Curaçao over other options.
Every goal was a barrier broken.

Leandro Bacuna
Led the team with 3 assists in qualification.
Has played in the English Premier League
with Aston Villa and Championship with Cardiff City
before moving to the Eredivisie.
A Dutch Caribbean professional who came home
to represent his island.

Eloy Room
One of the most capped players in Curaçao history.
Goalkeeper. Leader. Symbol of the journey.
Was there in 2016 when the dream began.
Was there in 2025 when it became reality.

Rangelo Janga
The national team's all-time leading goalscorer.
Has played in the Netherlands, Belgium, Slovakia,
Cyprus and Kazakhstan.
His goals helped write this chapter of history.

THE COACH — DICK ADVOCAAT

The Blue Wave is led by Dick Advocaat —
one of the most experienced coaches in
European football.

His career includes leading the Netherlands
national team at major tournaments and managing
clubs including PSV, Rangers, Zenit St Petersburg
(winning the UEFA Cup in 2008), and Fenerbahçe.

With Curaçao he will become the oldest manager
in history to coach a team at a FIFA World Cup.

A Dutch football legend — leading a Dutch
Caribbean island nation. The connection between
Curaçao and the Netherlands running deep
even on the touchline.

---

HOW IT ALL STARTED

The story of the modern Blue Wave began in 2015
when Dutch football legend Patrick Kluivert
became head coach.

Kluivert — a career spanning Ajax, AC Milan,
and Barcelona — opened the door for Dutch
Caribbean professionals playing in Europe
to represent the island they came from.

Players like Eloy Room made the leap.
Then more followed.
Then the team started winning.
Then they reached the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals.
Then they came close to qualifying in 2022.
Then — in November 2025 — they made history.

Ten years. One journey. One destination.
The FIFA World Cup.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR OUR COMMUNITY

For every Dutch Caribbean family in the Netherlands
who watched those qualification matches with
their hearts in their throats —
you saw yourselves on that pitch.

For every child in Willemstad who grew up
dreaming of the world stage and being told
it was too far away —
it is not too far away anymore.

For every person of Caribbean heritage anywhere
in the world who carries their identity quietly —
the Blue Wave just gave you permission to be loud.

This is what BBI — Break Barriers Intentionally —
stands for. Every day. In every context.

The therapy room. The community workshop.
The classroom. The heritage program.
And now — the FIFA World Cup pitch.

Barriers break when you decide they will.
Curaçao decided.

THE 10% PLEDGE

BBI Core pledges 10% of every Blue Wave
product sale to a youth program in Curaçao.

Because celebrating this moment means nothing
if we do not invest in the young people who
will write the next chapter.

We are finalizing our partner youth organization
in Curaçao in coordination with community leaders
on the island. We will announce our chosen
partner on this page.
